What if I told you that you can make 5 gallons of laundry soap for less than $2.00? We have been making our own laundry soap for over a year and this is the recipe we use. You can find all of the ingredients on the cleaning isle of your local grocery store. It keeps our clothes clean and leaves them smelling fresh!

homemade laundry soap

The ingredients you need to make a 5 gallon bucket of laundry soap is:

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • Grate 2/3’s of a bar of Fels Naptha
  • And lots of water (12 cups of water warmed on low heat on the stove, 8 cups of hot tap water to be added when you mix the ingredients in the 5 gallon bucket, and 2 gallons and 12 cups of hot tap water for your final stir).
  1. Place a big pot on the stove and add 12 cups of water on LOW heat.
  2. Add the shredded Fels-Naptha. Constantly whisk until the soap is dissolved.
  3. After the soap is completely dissolved add 1 cup Borax and 1 cup Washing Soda.
  4. Stir with whisk until the Borax and Washing Soda is completely dissolved and the mixture thickens (about 5 minutes).
  5. Add 8 cups of HOT tap water to your 5 gallon bucket.
  6. Pour soap mixture into bucket and stir (we use a big paint stirrer).
  7. If you want to add some fragrance to your laundry soap you can add a couple of drops of essential oils at this time.
  8. Stir to mix the soap mixture and water and essential oils if added.
  9. Then, add 2 gallons + 12 cups of hot tap water to five gallon water.
  10. Stir and cover. Let it sit overnight.

Use 1/2 cup of laundry soap for each load of laundry.
Store in mason jars, old laundry detergent containers or just scoop it right out of the 5 gallon bucket. Make sure the soap is covered when not using.

I use an old fashioned hand grater but you could use your food processor if you are feeling adventurous.

laundry-cheese

Laundry Cheese.

Be careful not to leave the shredded Fels-Naptha lying around the house. It really looks like cheese. The first time I made this my daughter walked by and said that cheese smells really good!
